NYU Grossman Long Island School of Medicine’s Student Handbook is a centralized source of information about school policies and procedures. It contains information necessary for you to participate in campus life and answers many of your questions about various aspects of medical school.

Policies and Procedures

All medical students are subject to the following policies and procedures and are expected to be familiar with them (a Kerberos ID and password required).

Access to Student Records

You may request access to academic records that we maintain for each student, including grades, evaluations, summaries of skill assessments, examination scores, and progress reports. Learn more about our policy on access to student records.

Attendance and Absence

Physician entrustability requires workplace-based training and assessment. Physical presence and active participation in the MD curriculum are paramount. Our attendance policy is designed to assure that all students are ready for each step in their medical training.

Campus Crime Reporting

Elective Courses

We have created an MD curriculum that prepares students to enter into a residency of their choice. Elective courses allow medical students to deepen their studies in areas of interest and to have enriching experiences. Our elective policy pertains to courses that count for academic credit.

Formative Assessment and Feedback

Learning Environment and Duty Hours

Mandatory Vaccination

All students are required, as a condition of initial and then continued enrollment, to comply with the NYU Langone Hospital—Long Island mandatory vaccination policy.

Noncurricular Experiences

We have developed a policy to assist medical students and faculty at NYU Grossman Long Island School of Medicine and its affiliated hospitals in the supervision of medical students engaged in paracurricular research or non-required clinical experiences, which are classified as noncurricular activities. Nonsmoking

Public Representation

Satisfactory Academic Progress

A student must complete all degree requirements to progress through NYU Grossman Long Island School of Medicine’s academic program. Expectations for academic progress are outlined in the advancement, assessment, and graduation policy; the remediation, dismissal, and appeals policy; and the satisfactory academic progress for financial aid policy.

Decisions of remediation, suspension, or dismissal of a student for academic reasons or a demonstrated lack of professionalism rest with the Student Progress and Promotion Committee.

Security and Campus Safety

NYU Grossman Long Island School of Medicine’s campus security department maintains a safe and open environment to ensure peace and a high quality of life for students, staff, faculty, and visitors. We patrol campus at all hours and have officers stationed in the emergency room and ambulance areas. To contact campus security, call 516-663-5151 or dial extension 5151 from a campus phone.

Selection Criteria

We utilize a holistic review in the selection process, evaluating each applicant’s experiences, attributes, and other established selection criteria.

Sexual Misconduct, Relationship Violence, and Stalking

NYU Grossman Long Island School of Medicine maintains a policy on reporting, investigating, and resolving instances of sexual misconduct, relationship violence, and stalking. Learn more about Title IX policies and procedures for helping students who experience these situations.

Rotations and Clinical Assignments

NYU Grossman Long Island School of Medicine has developed a policy for students to request changes to assigned rotations, clerkship, and other clinical placements.

Student Exposure to Infectious and Environmental Hazards

NYU Grossman Long Island School of Medicine has established a process that ensures that medical students who are exposed to infectious blood borne pathogens are evaluated, offered timely post exposure prophylaxis when indicated, and receive appropriate follow-up care. Student Immunizations

Vaccination requirements for medical students are established by the Student Health Center based on recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and in coordination with regulations from NYU Langone Hospital—Long Island and the New York State Department of Health. Tuition and Fee Refunds

In the event of a student being dismissed or withdrawing from school for any reason, refunds are issued in accordance with our tuition and fee refund policy.

NYU Langone may at times obtain and/or use photographs, audio, and/or video recordings to connect and share with students, staff, faculty, and the general public for purposes of education, marketing, publicity, fundraising, and student recruitment on behalf of NYU Langone, via the Internet, print publications, social media, and other media.
